The Bible is clear that a church is not a collection of various religious background and belief systems, taught, perceived, learned or otherwise, but rather an assembly of peculiar, zealous, and unified human beings with the same belief system.  That belief system must be centered upon the Gospel.

Over the more than two decades I have been saved, I have seen this idea violated over and over to the point of despair and difficulty. It causes the gospel to be suppressed and the love of God to stop being shed abroad.

In the recent days we have seen a worldwide pandemic and then improper and unfair treatment on behalf of those servants of the people.  Subsequent use of these things as an excuse to destroy, steal and kill only goes to show the depravity of sin laden mankind.  As the world becomes more and more dis-unified, it becomes even more imperative that those that make up the church become more unified.

I am grateful for our church and the assembling with which it propagates.  However, assembling for the sake of fellowship is not much more than a country club and we are a church, to the glory of God.  We must ensure that we are always seeking unity in spirit, mind, and faith.  Through the gospel of Grace and ensuring that our church is Christ centered, we can have the confidence that true Biblical unity adorns our assembling.  The New Testament gives us several distinct places to find these truths but let us look at these:

Unity of Spirit

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:3 (KJV)

With regards to our assembling, if we are not performing it in the Holy Spirit of God, then we are doing it in man’s spirit.  We must remember though, that it is the Holy Spirit of God who is the same all the time.  Further, He is the one who will point us to truth according to John 16:3.  If we assemble together, as saved people, with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, then we will be in the unity of Spirit.  When this happens, great things can come about, inclusive of seeing our coast enlarged!

Unity of Mind

That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:6 (KJV)

Oh, how our minds are so busy in todays world.  There are so many different things tugging and pulling at our minds.  So many things weighing our minds down, from the simple to the complex.  Even the most well-meaning Christians, will often come to church with best of intents, but minds that are so burdened down by the dailies of life.  God has ordained order in the church and when we assemble, we need to seek after that order as it relates to seeking the kingdom of God.  See Matthew 6:33

When we endeavor to walk in the Spirit, seeking the kingdom of God first, working to have our mind set on Christ and His church, the assembling will be gloriously adorned with a congregational wide mindset toward Holy praise and worship.

Unity of Faith

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Ephesians 4:13 (KJV)

True Gospel Unity culminates when those assembled are fully in the unity of faith.  This is not the faith of moving mountains, so much as it is the faith that once was delivered to the saints, according to Jude 3.  This is the doctrines, principles, and truths of the Word of God, set down for us in the King James Bible.  When Spirit filled believers with a unified mind toward the kingdom come together in agreement with the doctrines and teachings of the Scripture, God shows His presence in a mighty way.

Satan and his forces of evil are out to disrupt any point listed today.  If he can get more points broken, then he will, but honestly, he is happy with even just one.  Therefore it is imperative that if we want to see God do something big in our church and in our lives this year… “Enlarge Our Coast” then we are going to need to work hard to assemble in unity.

If there is one thing we have learned regarding our church, it is that it always rises to the challenge of the hour.  Victory may God bless our efforts and help each one of us to seek this kind of unity, in Spirit, mind and faith.
